FAQ

We help connect high school students to employers to gain hands on experience and awareness of in-demand careers. Internships cannot be guaranteed; however, CAREERS works hard to find suitable paid opportunities for all students.

Internships are a full-time or part-time temporary jobs that can be worked into your school year or summer break. CAREERS connects high school students to paid internship opportunities in a variety of careers. If you are interested in a paid internship in the skilled trades, you may also be able to earn hours towards your journeyperson certification through the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP)

CAREERS facilitates internship placements in:

  • Skilled Trades
  • Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
  • Health
  • Agriculture
  • Forestry
  • Energy
  • And many more!

A full list of opportunities can be found on the Internship Opportunities page or in the CAREERS Overview PDF.

CAREERS paid internships:

  • are full-time or part-time temporary jobs.
  • can be worked into your school year or summer break.
  • are coordinated so schedules work for both the employer and the student.
  • have start dates that vary throughout the province.

Previous experience is always great on a resume, but it is not required. Internships are a good way to gain experience. Everyone has to start somewhere; this could be the start for you!

A driver’s license is not mandatory to apply with CAREERS; however, a driver’s license may be required by an employer.

We work with many students in a variety of schooling situations. If you are registered as a student in Alberta, you are eligible to get credits and get paid with a high school internship. Connect with CAREERS to find out how you can participate.

All students must complete the HCS 3000 course. It is a mandatory Alberta Education prerequisite course about workplace safety systems. Its completion is required for all Alberta high school students wanting to participate in a Work Experience Program or the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP).

Depending on the internship sector, such as with Agriculture internships, there may be other courses that are also recommended or required.

Internships can be available for students as early as grade 10. CAREERS also has internship opportunities in certain regions around Alberta for youth who have recently graduated high school.

All of our services are provided free of charge. As a non-profit organization that offers free services, CAREERS relies on the generosity of government, industry, and donors. Together, we can TAKE ON THE FUTURE!

Yes. All CAREERS internship and apprenticeship students are required to be paid minimum wage or higher by their employer.

Interested high school students may be eligible to begin their apprenticeship training through the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP). RAP is a joint Alberta Education and Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) initiative allowing students to earn hours towards their certification while still in high school.
