SEARCHING FOR A FLEXIBLE INTERNSHIP?<\/strong><\/p>

So, you\u2019re looking to build your experience but need some flexibility due to your school schedule this fall? Why not consider an internship in Information and Communications Technology (ICT)? With the power of technology allowing us to be online anywhere, anytime\u2026 the right ICT opportunity could be a great way to try out an internship while being flexible.<\/p>

The power of technology: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>

Everyone uses technology, employers included! It\u2019s also not just specific to the tech sector, every industry has ICT positions. Consider the use of computers to document work or the use of different programs and software to help make our lives easier. Ever been influenced by an online ad? If you answered yes, there\u2019s your proof that social media and the use of online marketing works and is something practically every business does now!<\/p>

With technology being everywhere we go, CAREERS has supported students working in all sorts of industries, from real estate to non-profit and even the construction and automotive sector. You are not just limited to tech companies, whether it\u2019s the skilled trades, agriculture, or health care, technology can be found anywhere.<\/p>

Not only are ICT internships available in a variety of workplaces, the work in ICT can also be done remotely sometimes! Because technology can help us stay connected to each other anywhere, anytime, there are internships that allow students to work at home\/remotely. Some students even get lucky and get an internship with flexible hours, how cool is that? You could be working from home while completing projects, attending meetings, etc. or checking in with your team while completing different site visits to meet clients and grab the best social media content.<\/p>

The power of technology makes ICT internships unique and innovative and can allow for some flexibility in your schedule.<\/p>

ICT internships give us transferable skills<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

Even if you\u2019re unsure if you want to commit to ICT as a future career path, the skills you could gain in an ICT internship will go a long way. Since technology is so universal, the skills you develop with technology are easily transferable to other career paths making it a truly flexible opportunity to help you take on the future!<\/p>

Some skills to consider:<\/p>

  • Familiarity with technology, overall,<\/li>
  • Being able to use different programs that are applicable in a variety of workplaces (think Microsoft Office, Google products, Adobe programs, etc.)<\/li>
  • Organizational skills<\/li>
  • Adaptability skills<\/li>
  • Communication skills<\/li>

    What does it take to succeed in an ICT internship? <\/strong><\/p>

    Some ICT Knowledge <\/em><\/strong><\/p>

    While employers likely won\u2019t expect you to be an expert in everything ICT, it does help to be familiar with some of the things you might be doing. For instance, if you\u2019re in a social media internship, it would be beneficial to have some experience with social media apps! Or maybe you\u2019re helping with graphic design, it would be a good idea to mention any related programs you\u2019ve used or projects that you\u2019ve completed. If you are worried that you don\u2019t have the right skills or knowledge, it\u2019s never too late to start learning. Consider taking an option class related to the ICT area you want to go into or pick up a side hobby to start developing your skills.<\/p>

    Passion to Learn <\/em><\/strong><\/p>

    With technology constantly changing around us, a drive and passion to keep up with learning about those changes is what will help you move forward in the ICT world. Whether it\u2019s practicing your skills through projects, attending training or additional courses, or networking with professionals, we hope you find ways to stay motivated to keep up with ICT and all it has to offer!<\/p>

    Time Management Skills <\/em><\/strong><\/p>

    Yes, an ICT internship can be flexible but it will only feel successful if you can demonstrate excellent time management skills. While a remote internship can have its perks, you definitely still have to stay on top of things and balancing an internship amongst other commitments is a skill that will take some work. If this isn\u2019t your forte, consider using a calendar or agenda to organize yourself and prioritize your responsibilities accordingly. Also make sure to check in with your team and supervisor whenever you need help, don\u2019t be afraid to ask questions and seek advice!<\/p>
