FINDING PURPOSE – A GUIDE FOR YOUTH

As a teenager or young adult, navigating through the
complexities of life can often feel like wandering through a maze without a
map. Among the many questions that may arise is, “What is my
purpose?” It’s a question that transcends career aspirations or material
success and delves deep into the essence of who you are and what you want to
contribute to the world. So, where do you even start? Here are some steps to
help you along the way:

1. Self-Reflection: Begin by taking the time to reflect on your
values, interests, and strengths. What activities make you feel most alive?
What ignites the fire within you? What are you naturally good at? Journaling or
meditation can be helpful tools for this process. By understanding yourself
better, you can start to uncover clues about what truly matters to you.

2. Explore Your Passions: Don’t be afraid to explore different
interests and hobbies. Whether it’s volunteering, trying out new sports, or applying
for an internship, exposing yourself to different experiences can help you
identify what resonates with you on a deeper level. If you live in Alberta, check
out some of the opportunities available at CAREERS.
Pay attention to the activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.

3. Set Meaningful Goals: Once you have a sense of your passions
and interests, set goals that align with them. These goals should challenge you
and push you out of your comfort zone while also being realistic and
achievable. Once you set your goals, create a detailed plan to get there, and
hold yourself to it. Remember, a goal without a plan is only a wish.

4. Seek Inspiration: Look for inspiration from role models,
mentors, or individuals who are making a positive impact in areas that interest
you. Their journeys can provide valuable insights and guidance as you navigate
your own path. Reach out to them, ask for advice, and learn from their
experiences.

5. Embrace Failure and Learn from Setbacks: Understand that the
path to discovering your purpose is not always straightforward. There will be
setbacks and failures along the way, but it’s essential to view them as
opportunities for growth and learning. For example, an
internship
can sometimes tell you what you don’t want to do for a career,
and that’s just as valuable as finding your passion. Use these experiences to
course-correct and refine your direction.

6. Listen to Your Intuition: Trust your gut instincts and inner
voice. Pay attention to the moments when you feel happy, inspired and
authentic. Your intuition can often guide you towards opportunities and choices
that are in harmony with your purpose.

7. Make a Difference: Ultimately, finding your purpose is about
making a meaningful difference in the world, no matter how small. Whether it’s
through acts of kindness, advocacy for causes you believe in, or pursuing a
career that allows you to contribute positively to society, focus on how you
can use your unique talents and passions to create a better world.

8. Practice Gratitude: Regularly reflect how thankful you are
for the opportunities, experiences, and relationships in your life. Gratitude
can help you stay grounded and connected to what truly matters, contributing to
a stronger sense of  purpose amidst the
noise of daily life.

9. Be Patient and Persistent: Remember that finding your
purpose is a journey that takes time and patience. It’s okay if you don’t have
all the answers right away. Stay curious, stay open-minded, and keep moving
forward, one step at a time.

10. Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to seek support from friends,
family, or professionals if you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed. Sometimes,
having someone to bounce ideas off of or provide a different perspective can be
incredibly valuable.
